How HBOT Helps After a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can create a dramatic change in the contour of the abdomen — but it is also a significant surgical procedure. During surgery, skin and tissue are lifted and repositioned, small blood vessels are disrupted, and the body immediately begins the complex work of repairing the surgical area.

That is why some patients are exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) after a tummy tuck as an adjunct to their surgeon-directed recovery plan.

HBOT involves breathing concentrated oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. Under increased pressure, significantly more oxygen can dissolve into the blood plasma, increasing the amount of oxygen available to tissues throughout the body. One of the physiological effects associated with HBOT is a reduction in tissue edema, or swelling. Hyperbaric oxygen causes temporary vasoconstriction — a narrowing of blood vessels — while still delivering high levels of oxygen to the tissues through oxygen-rich plasma.

This combination may help reduce excess fluid accumulation without depriving healing tissues of oxygen.

HBOT is not a replacement for compression garments, movement recommendations, lymphatic support, or any other instructions provided by your surgeon, but it may be considered as an additional recovery tool.

2. HBOT Increases Oxygen Delivery to Healing Tissue

Oxygen is one of the fundamental ingredients the body needs for wound healing.

During a tummy tuck, tissue is separated and repositioned, which can temporarily affect some of the small blood vessels supplying the abdominal area. That makes adequate oxygen delivery especially important during recovery.

There is growing research specifically involving aesthetic surgery.

A systematic review and meta-analysis examining HBOT as an adjunct to aesthetic procedures included abdominoplasty among the most commonly represented surgeries and found promising results related to healing and postoperative recovery. Researchers also emphasized that treatment protocols varied considerably and that additional high-quality randomized trials are needed. (PubMed)

One retrospective study involving 356 abdominoplasty patients found fewer postoperative complications among patients who received preoperative HBOT compared with those who did not. The researchers concluded that the findings were encouraging but similarly called for prospective studies to determine which patients benefit most. (PubMed)
